"I hope you love birds too. It is economical. It saves going to heaven."                                                                                                                                   Emily Dickinson (1830 - 1886)

Everyone likes birds. What wild creature is more accessible to our eyes and ears, as close to us and everyone in the world, as universal as a bird?                               Sir David Attenborough

There is nothing in which the birds differ more from man than the way in which they can build and yet leave a landscape as it was before.                                        Robert Lynd (1879 - 1949)

As is so very apparent, this is a very new Field Guide. It took days to input the entire database of birds from the ABA (American Bird Association). Formatting and removal of extraneous data followed. This is the latest edition from the ABA and will likely be updated (if there are updates available) sometime during the summer of 2017.

The intention here is to include every North American bird that I have photographed, to help you with identification, so there may be numerous photos of any given species. With 120,000 photos to go through, it will likely take a month or more to include all the birds I have here. Some of the photos are quite obviously less than optimal. The reasons for this may be older and less capable equipment, and less experience. Lighting (time of day) may also present slightly different coloration. Also, photos taken from too far a distance require greater cropping and therefore will be less clear. It’s a good thing that as you photograph more, you no longer have to keep less than optimal shots, so with time, the photos should be improving.

The numbers next to each bird species (below and to the left) ‘should’ correspond to the number included with each bird photo. If there are errors (due to adding a species somewhere in the middle) the numbers may be wrong. There could also be typos. Please let me know by clicking HERE to email me.

A very large portion of the birds are from NJ where we lived for 30+ years. Increasingly, I will be adding photos from the U.S. south, particularly in and around Georgia, where we spend a good deal of time. Some photos from beyond North America.

I hope you find this useful and thank you for your interest.

Rich Wolfert

May I suggest some excellent phone resources. Most of these are pay once only, and are updated dynamically forever.

eBird      Paterson Birds of NA    Birds (Nat’l Geo.)     BirdsEye       BirdsEye NA       iBird Plus  HeadsUp    Bird Codes              Merlin Bird ID         Chirp! USA +   BirdMigration     BirdLog NA Hotspots   BirdMigration           Warbler Guide          Sibley Birds   BirdLog World

All of these should be available on your phone’s store. Why have several field guides? No bird is ‘typical’ and each artist’s representation may help with an ID that is difficult.

Due to the number of photos that will reside in this Photographic Field Guide, it was necessary to break it up into 5 volumes. The birds of North America are represented in the following volumes.

    Volume 1: Geese - Coots

    Volume 2: Rails - Petrels

Volume 3: Storm Petrels - Parrots

Volume 4: Tyrant Flycatchers - Waxbills

Volume 5: Old World Sparrows - Blackbirds

You may click on any of the lines above to go to that volume or use the main menu at the upper left of this page.
